


LightSmyth Technologies' family of straight-line constant pitch binary diffraction gratings is fabricated in silicon by deep-ultraviolet photolithography and subsequent etch – the workhorse fabrication tools of the semiconductor industry.
The high fidelity fabrication tools employed provide high spatial coherence and minimize stray light – LightSmyth lithographically fabricated diffraction gratings exhibit scatterd light levels lower by up to two orders or magnitude than traditional holographic and ruled gratings. Groove depth and duty cycle are optimized to minimize undesirable higher-order diffraction. Each grating is a master, free from replication flaws. Grating surfaces are cleanable and abrasion-resistant. Silicon substrates provide thermal conductivity approaching that of copper and thermal expansion lower than Pyrex making it an ideal general substrate material and in a class by itself in high temperature or power applications. Sub-millimeter substrate thicknesses make these gratings ultra-light and enable device miniaturization.

Typical grating thickness is approximately 0.73 mm. Substrate height and width tolerance is ± 0.3 mm. Grating substrate: Silicon. In the part number, X refers to the exterior grating surface and X=Si, Al, AlM, AlO, and Au represent, respectively, bare silicon, Aluminum, Aluminum + MgF2 protective layer, Aluminum + Al2O3 protective layer, and gold.
